"Stiffing is not cool"
Eight on $164??? I'd be pissed as fuck as well, this is how stereotypes continue. I like how she gave no reason to stiff the guy other than a couple lame ass excuses, comparing a dinner at a nice steakhouse to Taco Bell.
Yeah, this is 2007, fucking tip unless you have a reason, the waiter probably had to shell a buck or two out of his own pocket for the privilege of waiting on this woman.
I've seen a patron or two called out on stiffing and its funny as hell, maybe not professional, but hey, still funny. Wish I have this woman on my last shift ever, make my fucking life!

Are you kidding me with this BS??! Stereotypes are common when it comes to tipping, but this really turns a common stereotype into the true mentality of this woman and, dare I say, color/background.
I mean listen to her. So disrespectful of fellow humans regardless of color/race. Does she live under a rock? Not understand the concept of tipping? This makes me mad, and I'm not even service industry anymore. Seriously WTF!
Your post set me off (see my post related to your post tonight!). Pass this video around the web please!

this person proves the stereotypical low life jerk really exists. First her language shows she has no other way of expressing herself with the constant MF's dropped every 2 or 3 words.
Secondly, leaving 8 bucks for a tip for no other reason than that was how much money you had left shows her ignorance of how the process works. (Although continuing to argue with a loser like this probably wasn't the smartest thing to do).
And last, this doesn't have anything to do with being black or white, it has to do with being a cheap SOB with no class as she proved in her little video.
Taco Bell is too good for you.
In my experience, black people do not tip well. I don't necessarily think it's because they are poor or cheap, but somewhat of a cultural thing, they just weren't taught to do it, so they don't. That's really no excuse, and it may be racist, but it's absolutely true. The black servers at my work say it's true as well. It is amazing to me that bad tippers go into a restaurant knowing that they are lousy tippers, but will still run you ragged. You can usually tell when it's going to happen because they leave the tip in cash, and then BOOK IT out the door. They don't sit and linger or wait for you to see their awful tip... which makes me believe that they know what they're doing is wrong.
Women, in general, are pretty awful tippers too. I think women are just cheap except for when it comes to ourselves. We'll spend $600 on a handbag, but a 20% tip? Forget it. Quite a few times I've had a table of 2 or 4 where everyone paid for their own food. The men in the group would tip 25% and the woman would hit 15% to the penny.Or somtimes just below. Same table. Same exact experience the men had.
As my mom always says, "If you can't afford to tip, you can't afford to eat out."
That's exactly it, what Anon said. If you can't afford a tip, then you couldn't afford that filet mignon and two drinks. People should realize that the waiter is probably paying out, on average, 5-7% of every customer's bill on tip-out and taxes, out of pocket if the tip is less than that amount. "I paid for my steak, I didn't pay for you?" Good. Get your own food and drinks next time.
Ok, run this by me..
Front door, thats right - nobody opened it for me.
Front desk / hostess - 17 year old annoying chick who is mumbling to her coworkers and eventually gets around to asking me "how many". ( Not "Hello, welcome. How are you... etc", just barks out the 'how many' ) This chick makes about 7.50 an hour, and at 17 years old thats usually more than most of her friends.
other hostess type person - Again, 17 or so, making $7.50 an hour also. Puts me wherever the front desk person said to. Doesn't care if the table is slightly dirty or junk on the chairs, walks back up to front desk, sometimes mumbles 'someone will be with you soon'.
random water person - "Would you like some water?". This person usually doubles as the coffee, tea, and busser. Bussers make at least minimum wage. Bussers who know any more english than "Water?" might make 25 cents above minimum wage. ( This is their choice to work there, not educate themselves for a better job, and not learn more english to make more money doing some other position/job ).
Actual Waiter - Usually doesn't ask how we are or how our night is going. Usually tells us about the special we already read about at the front waiting area. Asks if we want any other drinks.
random drink person - this is usually another 17 year old who doubles as a food runner. They almost never know who gets what drink. They probably have access to that information, but it's easier and quicker to just ask the people at the table.
waiter again - either comes by every 2 minutes upset that you don't know what you want yet, or doesn't come by for 5-10 minutes because they are somewhere fucking off or bullshitting with a different table. Some of them even sit down with you and pretend to socialize, but the majority who i see do this are doing it simply because they are lazy as hell and want to rest their legs/feet.
food runner - again, has no idea who gets what food. It's quicker and easier to just ask the people at the table. Some times if there are only 2 people at the table, they'll toss the food on the table and just hope for the best. Usually to be polite, we wait till they leave and then trade plates. The better food runners will stick around long enough to ask if you need any condiments, but this happens less than 20% of the time.
waiter - Usually has no idea how long your food has been on your table or who delivered it to you. So they either ask 45 seconds after you have gotten the food, which is too soon to know if you really like it or if you have any issues - or comes by 10 minutes into it - and at that point half the people at your table are 1/2 done eating so why slow everyone down by sending your order back or creating a big stink?
random busser - Someone eventually comes by grabbing plates or glasses. Again, this person is making at least minimum wage. Many cases they don't know enough english so if you ask them for something they have to send a food runner or find your waiter.
waiter - will either try to upsell you into some coffee, desserts, or could care less and just slips your check onto the end of the table as they walk by.
SO, By all means.. Tell me why I would tip big????? 80% of the help you got were from hourly people who couldn't give a damn. 20% of the help is from the waiter who does nothing but scribble down your order and hope that 3 other people don't fuck up making it or serving it. WHAT IS SCRIBBLING AN ORDER WORTH???
The actual restaurant is making 300% profit on most of the food, and 800% profit on most of the liquor you order. They hire the cheapest staff they can. So you end up with half a dozen people who really don't care what you want or what went wrong, and as long as you keep tipping 20% they don't spit in your food???????
Long story short - Restaurant needs to tip their own staff by paying out a % of profits. Not gouge their customers and underpay their staff!!!!!!!
That is why I am soooo glad I work at a high end bistro on the coast of Maine, no corporate bullshit rules. Our chef/owner would have followed La Queefah outside himself, ripped her verbally, and barred her. Guaranteed. I have seen him do it. We have a reservation list a month in advance, we don't encourage guests like that to patronize our establishment. Skank bitch.
That effing blows. What a terrible person. I tip 15% on bad service even...
Ug. I hope she does make it into your place someday...
I wish more people had the damn common sense to tip their servers and bartenders. Y'all work really hard. Regardless of the service, I tip. And if the service is even marginally good, I tip decent (30% and up.) At my favorite restaurant /pub, I am well known to tip at least 50%, even when they are busy and service is slow. Because people in that business deserve it. and before you think I have a great, high-paying job, I barely get minimum wage. If I am going out, I prepare to tip and tip well. That is just fair and sensible. I appreciate all that the waiters/servers/bar staff do.
she said tip 10-15% she didnt even know that 10 is unacceptable interesting
She did mention her sister is a waitress and mentioned bad tipping but she didnt care...just a typical selfish american. we see more and more of these everyday
I used to wait tables and I hoped for the best and sometimes I got great tips but a very telling moment was on Mothers Day one of the busiest days for restaurants. One of our servers waited on a table hand and foot; we were on 3 table stations so I know no one could have done badly. After 2 hours of waiting on her table(which took up 2 of her 3 table station) the bill was over 200 bucks and she got a 2 dollar tip. What an insult. Thankfully the manager that night understod serving and voided most of that meal so the server got what she deserved but really 2 bucks? more of an insult than a tip. and yes she was very competent and professional she just got handed a ghetto table who leaves 1% it was just not right :(
All I have to say about this is it's a SHAME and a DISGRACE.
"She did mention her sister is a waitress and mentioned bad tipping but she didnt care...just a typical selfish american. we see more and more of these everyday"
DITTO TO THAT ^^^^
All she did was try to justify her crappy tip, yet all she proved was her significant lack of decent manners.
I don't think it's a color issue, as much greed issue.
Gaads, I thought she'd never STFU. Why make this video at all? What was the catalyst for her self serving rant? pointless too.
Are you people kidding me??
I've said this before, and I'll say it once again -
We as customers do not "Owe" you as servers ANYTHING.
You chose to take this job, a job description was given to you, along with a pay scale.
Tipping is not required, it is a compliment unless there is a specific place designated on the bill for gratuity.
Again, you chose the job, as I chose mine. I know what I am going to make every single week and budget accordingly, might I suggest you purchase a calculator, calculate your hourly wage multiplied by the precious hours you spend catering to others, and there you have it, a base number with which to pay your bills.
Not enough there?
Switch Jobs!
Hey, check it out, Lil Miss Wrong as Fuck---servers, I believe, do understand that tipping is not required. Do YOU understand that it IS a testament to the CHARACTER of a person? It is a societal norm. OUR societal norm. Maybe not in OTHER societies, but in ours it is. In sociology class they teach you that behavior that strays AWAY from the norm is regarded as DEVIANT behavior. Therefore, it is considered ASSHOLISH IN GENERAL to not leave a tip for someone who has spent some time of their day serving you. YES, of COURSE that is the job. But don't you think someone who waits on people for a living for less than $4 an hour in most cases must have somewhat of a knack and/or a love for dealing with people? And therefore should be tipped for good service? What does it say about someone as a PERSON when they are too much of a tightwad to leave at least a 15% gratuity for someone for waiting on them hand and foot for a while? Since it is normal for us to tip people in the service industry in this country, it takes a real asshole to say "us customers don't owe you servers ANYTHING!"
Whew. That is just my opinion.
I like how she thinks 10% is a good tip!! When my costumers sass off to me, they do get cut-loose, or, in very special cases, I get to speak my piece.
PS check out my new blog -- willworkfortips.wordpress.com
Wow, loud, crass and a poor tipper. I hate people like this. I have had the unfortunate experience of going out with "friends" who behave like this in the US. Thankfully there would be at least one or two others who would help me cover the proper tip.
The service staff here is paid a normal salary and I still tip a job well done.
To some of the commenters--this is not typical American behavior. Most Americans understand our tipping customs and observe them. I tend to go to the generous side (especially on small $ meals) because I know how hard servers work. I've never had to do it and I'm very grateful.
To me, less than 20% anymore is unacceptable unless there was a problem with the service.
OMG, I just watched that video, dude, I would have been PISSED!
I waited on this family of 5 that left me nothing, but insisted on telling me how good the service was and how in their country they don't tip.
I wanted to cry, do thay think I do this shit for fun? OMG.
Anyway, just ran across your blog today so you may get some comments on older posts.
Bekah
MY COMMENT TO THIS MATTER WOULD BE TO UNDERSTAND THAT, IF GRATUITIES WERE INCLUDED IN THE BILL, THIS WOMANS' SEAFOOD SALAD WOULD HAVE COST HER 15-20% MORE, AND IF THAT HAD BEEN THE CASE, SHE AND HER FRIENDS WOULD NOT HAVE HAD ENOUGH MONEY TO PAY THEIR BILL, WHICH WOULD HAVE ENDED IN A CALL TO LOCAL POLICE, WHO'S OBLIGATION IT WOULD HAVE BEEN TO PLACE THESE PEOPLE UNDER ARREST FOR STEALING. BOTTOM LINE IS...BY NOT LEAVING A PROPER GRATUITY, YOU ARE ALL CRIMINALS OF SORTS.
ONE OTHER THING. THAT SERVER, ALTHOUGH NOT VERY PROFESSIONAL IN HIS REACTION TO A REALLY BAD TIP, WORKED VERY HARD TO PLEASE THESE PEOPLE ALONG WITH THE OTHER TABLES IN HIS STATION. AT THE END OF THE DAY, HE'S REQUIRED TO TIP OUT THE BUSBOYS, THE BARTENDERS, THE FOOD RUNNERS, MAYBE EVEN THE HOSTESSES. THAT ACCOUNTS FOR 3-5% OF HIS SALES. DO THE MATH. HE WOULD HAVE TO PAY, OUT OF HIS POCKET, A MINIMUM OF $4.92 OF THE $8.00 LEFT ON HER $164.00 TAB. lEAVING HIM WITH JUST OVER $3.00 TO FEED HIMSELF AND POSSIBLY HIS FAMILY.
IF I SAW THIS WOMAN SITTING IN MY STATION, AND I WAS AWARE OF THIS INCIDENT, SHE WOULD DEFINATELY NOT WANT TO EAT OR DRINK WHAT EVER IT WAS THAT SHE ORDERED FROM ME. THE STINKY SPOON MAY EVEN MAKE IT TO HER TABLE...IF YOU GET MY DRIFT.
Pure ignorance! To ASSUME that you are absolutely in the right, when you have so obviously insulted someone in THEIR profression, is unacceptable. This woman clearly does not understand how things work in this buisness, nor does she listen to anything that may educate her about it. The fact that she attempts to make it a racial issue is appalling. It's a shame that racism against her in her past, has obviously made her a racist herself. That fact remains that tips are our income and thats just the way it is. Don't tell me to find another profession! I am good at what I do, I make an honest living, and I provide a service for people. Most of whom appreciate and respect what we do, as well as how the system works. The tip is part of your bill whether its printed in front of you or not. If you can't afford a 20% tip then you can't afford to eat out PERIOD !
yeah blacks are poor tippers. they always be making some fucking excuse not to tip. i couldn't even listen to the whole video. after that first excuse (price was kinda high, you know filet mignon and taco bell). wtf, if you don't have the money don't go to a fancy restaurant! $8 and some change on a $164 tab is fucking less than 5%. i would've snapped the fuck off, too. i mean you gotta be kidding me!
i used to work at a chinese carryout restaurant in a black neighborhood. they always pull some stupid shit. oh i found a hair in my food. really? this clearly african american textured hair came from my head (i'm chinese btw)? oh and you weren't too disgusted to eat all but 1/4 of the box left?
call me racist or whatever. but you know that type of customer. and yes i have encountered generous black customers, but they usually act/talk crazy like this lady on YouTube.
I've worked in the service industry, and I agree, poor tippers suck.
I've been tipped poorly by black people, and it sucked.
But you, know, I've been tipped poorly by white people too!
In fact, I think more white people have tipped me poorly than black people!! (probably because I was working in a white neighborhood)
Yet, I don't go around saying that white folks are poor tippers.
You know why? It's cause I'm not a racist, judging every other white person by the color of their skin, based on the actions of those crappy tippers.
To say, "Hey, I saw a video of a black jerk customer on youtube, therefore, all blacks are crappy tippers" is RIDICULOUS.
There are tons of stories of white poor tippers on this blog, yet no one is going around saying that whites are crappy tippers.
Just because someone else agrees or attempts to corroborate with your racist statement does not make it true.
People need to get a clue.
(P.S. this is not directed to the author of the blog, just to the racist commenters)
I love how she pulled the race card out. Honey, I don't think the waiter hated you because of your color, I think he hated you because you left him less than 5% on your bill (and I have to say, WTF?).
Also, she should learn to speak. I couldn't understand half of what she way saying. If she placed her order in that same voice, she should have tipped more than 20%.
Yes, we all agree that this woman is an ass, who has posted her face on you tube explaining that not only is she ignorant about how to tip in this country, but ignorant in general.
HOWEVER, for those of you who use this example as an excuse to reinforce your racist server mentality, shame on you. I am a server (a white one, by the way) and can't stand those others who ask me to pick up the black folk.. because they're too "busy"...with their one other table. Maybe the reason you don't make good tips off of tables with minorities-be they black, hispanic, female, gay, or otherwise- is because you neglect them based on your prejudgement when they sit down in your section. As a lifer in the service industry, I have had A LOT of bad tippers, and most of them have been middle-class white people. Ask yourself, do you just not notice it as much unless they don't look like you?
Wait for her kids to start working their way through college. I'd love to hear her reaction when someone does the exact same thing against someone she knows.
SHE made this racist, no one else. In her opening statement she brought up the fact that she and her homegurls were the only black customers in the place. She DIDN'T say that they received poor service, just pointed out that they were the only blacks. I think she's the one who's racist.
And anyone who is skank enough to drop their pants on a video is disgusting. I can't believe someone actually behaves like this blogger.
Hey Homegurl, get some class. If you didn't have the money to tip you should have stayed your ass at home, you and your gurlfriends, You're disgusting.
To be fair, not all black people are bad tippers. I served a fifteen-top last night, all African American, and they tipped me on top of the gratuity we put on parties of or more.
What I find is that "trash", or people of a certain economic class that were raised with no manners tip poorly... and unfortunately, where I come from there are a higher percentage of black people who are not as well off as white people. Hence I usually recieve less percentage-wise from a black table.
In my defense, I don't start getting apprehensive about it until I go up, talk to them and see how the meal is. You get price checkers, a certain crassness, poor English--- and these are universal signs of bad tippers, any race or creed.
As I said before... there is a stereotype, and it holds true, but more for the fact that in my region, certain ethnic backgrounds are poorer and may not have been raised with the same cultural standards I was, especiall around money. These people tend to skimp on tip, rather than someone stiffing me because of their race.
